"Spoing" Another In A Long Line Of Pick-Up-And-Play Chillingo Hits

May 29, 2011
Spoing, a new, independently-developed game made by games2be and published by app house Chillingo, has been available on iTunes for a couple of weeks now. Robin even covered it in her AppAdvice Extra this past Tuesday. A lot of gamers are comparing the app to hits like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, but it's actually quite different. Comprised of 50 levels of increasing difficulty, Spoing has its title character chasing the Rainbow-Diamond thief across a varied and colorful world. At the end of each board, one such jewel is collected, and user scores are based on time to completion. There are four unique musical settings to accompany Spoing's journey, and the Nintendo-like storyline and presentation is cute and endearing. The physics behind the directional slingshot controls are tight and realistic, and tilting your iDevice can augment your shots just enough to score that perfect landing. Still, Spoing is not without its problems. As a first release, there are some issues to be resolved in future updates. I contacted the developer, and they said a revised version should be available within the next two weeks. Beyond performance optimizations, that update will contain the following tweaks:
  • Play-directly-to-the-next-level button
  • Music in app menu
  • Custom music during load times
  • Improved Crystal support
  • End-Story fix
With those improvements, Spoing should take its rightful place in the pantheon of successful App Store releases. Spoing for iPhone is $0.99, and Spoing HD for iPad costs $1.99.
