On Second Thought, AMOLED Not Coming To iPad 3

May 27, 2011
Just days after a report surfaced that Apple would begin using Samsung’s AMOLED technology for the iPad 3, a new report refutes that claim. Samsung doesn’t have the capacity to manufacturer screens for the iPad 3, according to OLED-display.net. The site, which reports on OLED TV display lighting information, contends Samsung is concentrating on producing “small- and medium-sized OLED panels with its latest production lines,” and not on display sizes of “6 inches to 9 inches until 2012.” The iPad 2 has a 9.7-inch display. On the surface, the previous statement seems to confirm, not refute the original claim. However, OLED-display.net believes Samsung couldn't actually deliver the screens to Apple until at least 2013. They state:
The conclusion of these hard facts are that its impossible that Samsung Mobile Display can deliver 7-9 inch OLED panels to Apple in 2011. Isuppli thinks its possible in 2013! So we think it can be possible that Samsung Mobile Display can deliver million 3-4 inch panels to Apple but not million of 7-9 inch panels in 2011/1Q2012.
Take a look at this video of Barry Young, director of the OLED Association:

It was earlier this week The Korean Herald concluded the iPad 3 could adopt Samsung's AMOLED display technology. This assessment came following a recent visit by Apple COO Tim Cook to South Korea. Super AMOLED displays tout brighter screens, less sunlight reflection, and reduced power consumption. What do you think? Leave your comments below.
