ThinkerToy Shapes ($0.99) by All Forces is the future of building blocks and shapes. We all remember as kids the countless hours we spent with building blocks and figuring out how shapes and colors work. With the iPad releasing new education apps everyday it doesn’t surprise me how much they’re revolutionizing the way children learn. ThinkerToy Shapes brings everything we remember about building blocks onto the iPad in a new colorful interactive way.

Though this app isn’t particularly marketed towards children, I don’t see an adolescent or adult enjoying this for too long. As a few reviews in the App Store suggest, customers are purchasing the app for their children and not themselves. However, the developers boast that this is a “geometric shape puzzle creation tool” and imply that it is for use with a more mature audience. Contrary to what the developers believe, the app is geared towards any age group, including children.

When beginning with a puzzle, users are given a canvas with a blank outline of a landmark, monument, or various other items. From here they will find colored blocks on either the left (horizontal) or bottom (vertical) side depending on how your holding your iPad. Users can drag and drop the blocks right into the grayed out space. Some blocks will need some tweaking, whether it’s adjusting the size or a simple rotation.

The app also features the ability to create custom puzzles right in the app. Not only can you create a puzzle but you can share it with other users and download theirs as well. This provides for an interesting community for users of this app, it’ll be interesting to see what other people add over time. Each puzzle can also be shared via email, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and much more.

Along with the ability to create your own puzzles comes an abundance of customization options. Users will find anything from creative sounds upon completion of a puzzle, to an array of color options for the blocks.

After several puzzles and the discovery of many extra features, it is safe to say this isn’t just for your kids. Though they’ll probably enjoy it more than most of us will. With 90 default levels and many more available for download, anyone will enjoy this one. Be sure to check it out in the App Store.
