Old school RPG fans rejoice. A new RPG called Izar has just hit the App Store and offers the same kind of feel that computer role playing games had in the 90s. The game also throws in some castle management and strategic gameplay for good measure.
As you may have noticed, based on Izar's screenshots, the game has a Heroes of Might and Magic vibe. There are castles to explore and even manage as well as horses to ride across the lengthy top-down landscapes with retro-style visuals.
There is also a menu of sorts showing various resources toward the top middle of the game's UI. For example gold and wood are clearly visible. This begs the question: Is Izar really an RPG or more of a tactical strategy game with combat, city building, and exploration? According to the app description feature list, it may be a bit of both:
The description also points to the classic Warlords or Might and Magic play style, but it is more personalized. The actual movement of individual units in combat seems based on games like the Baldurs Gate series or earlier Ultima RPGs. Also from the app description:
- Tactical combat involving attack and control spells.
- Building a castle to upgrade your troops.
- Building a mages tower to unlock new spells.
- Free navigation through the game world with dozens of fantastic locations.
You will travel through its magic world in real time, fighting for ancient artifacts and collecting materials for building your own castle. During combat, the game switches to the tactical mode. All combat takes place in restricted locations in the turn-based mode.Check out Izar on the App Store for $4.99.
