Xfinity TV App Updated And Now Crashes Instantly On Start-Up

May 19, 2011
The Xfinity TV app has just been updated to version 1.5 and Comcast seems to have added some great features, like the ability to watch the same channels on your home TV and iDevice simultaneously. However, If you take a look at the recent reviews, everyone seems to be having problems even starting the app. It just crashes on start-up without even allowing users to get into the app's main menu. This is a universal app, but features were being added separately for various devices through the updates. The additional promised features for the current 1.5 update include (taken from the app description):
  • Now watch movies and TV shows anytime, anywhere on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using a WiFi connection.
  • The XFINITY TV app also now automatically gives you mobile access to the same TV channel lineup you have at home.
  • It also lets you browse and tune to more of the On Demand TV shows and movies you expect.
  • The experience of returning to the application in search on iPhone has also been improved.
Xfinity TV started out as just an iDevice tool used with your TV as a menu; basically a digital remote. You could use your iPad or iPhone along with the app to browse channel listings and select the channel you want to watch quickly. After updates were made, iPad owners got a chance to watch on demand movies and TV shows straight from the app. Comcast promised subscribers the eventual ability to watch live TV, and with this update, looking in the app description, it seems like they may have done just that (the description doesn't specify whether the channels are broadcast live). The crashing issues, however, put a damper on these promises and we have to wait for another update to finally watch live TV on our iPads. A big addition to the app is enabling iPhone users to watch TV shows or movies straight from their device. However, just like iPad owners, iPhone users have been reporting crashes in the App Store reviews. If you still want to give the app a try, you can grab it from the App Store for free.
