About Apple's New Notification Center...

June 11, 2011
One of the upcoming features of iOS 5 is the Notification Center and its combination of alerts and Apple-created widgets. We don’t know whether Apple will allow third-party widgets here, but one 9 To 5 Mac reader has figured out a way. First unveiled at WWDC, the Notification Center is where new mail, texts, friend requests and other notifications are kept. In addition, Apple is planning to add two widgets to this area: a local weather forecast and stock ticker.

According to 9 To 5 Mac:
Although Apple has not said if iOS 5′s Notification Center widget section will have a public API for third-party widgets, developer WillFour20 has figured out a way to develop a simple widget as a proof of concept. This proof of concept demonstrates that even without proper tools provided by Apple in the SDK, making widgets for Notification Center is technically possible. As you can see in the image above, a space for the new widget was created and the programmed text, “hello world,” appears.
It would be a surprise for Apple to release iOS 5 and not allow third-party widgets. What do you think? What kind of widgets would you like? Leave your comments below.
