Dalvik iOS Port Sets Sail The Promise Of Faster Android-To-Apple Conversion

June 9, 2011
Dalvik, Google's Android OS virtual machine, has been ported to run on Apple iOS using an open source project dubbed "In The Box." According to the coder behind this initial effort, "In The Box" strives
[t]o provide a porting of Gingerbread Android runtime on top of iOS. It enables Android application developers to execute their Android applications on iOS.
Because I'm not an experienced Android or iOS developer, I can't speak about all the implications this new breakthrough carries. However, based on the project site's instructions, the product of all this should be an Android app that can be automatically (or nearly automatically) translated to run on non-jailbroken iDevices and sold through iTunes. Though this is only the first step in refining the software, the tool could eventually be of tremendous help to Android developers wanting to quickly and easily port their wares to iOS.
