Don't Plan The iPod touch Funeral Just Yet

June 24, 2011
Remember the rumor floating around that Apple might kill off the iPod touch? Well, that rumor might have just been debunked. New code has been discovered in iOS 5 beta that suggests the iPod touch will live to see another day, according to Cult Of Mac. Just last week, folks at TUAW were engaged in a heated discussion about why Cupertino might discontinue its high-end iPod. Much of this talk began when iOS 5 beta was released during WWDC and developers discovered there was no mention of an iPod touch in the code. Well, now code has been discovered. For those that are interested, code mentioning an “iPod4,2” resides within the “com.apple.fairplayd.N81.plist” file, located at /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/. However, Cult Of Mac states that while this code has been found, this doesn’t mean a total refresh of the iPod touch is coming. They said:
“The model identifier implies the next iPod touch will be merely an improvement upon the existing model, rather than a complete redesign.”
We personally think Apple would be crazy to eliminate the iPod touch. There is a huge market out there of gamers that don’t need an iPhone and aren’t willing to spend the extra money for an iPad 2. Thoughts?
