Dragon’s Lair 2: Time Warp ($2.99) by Electronic Arts is the sequel to the revolutionary (for its time) early 80s arcade game, Dragon’s Lair. Complete with all eight levels that were part of the original game, this app will please game collectors and retro fans alike.

The plot of the game is to, once again, save Princess Daphne from peril. This time, Dirk the Daring must travel through time and fight off characters from prehistoric times, fictitious literature and historical events.

The game play is exactly like the original arcade version, tapping the joystick to move, and hitting the attack button to fight. In the iOS version, you have four arrows on the right side of your screen that you must tap at the right time to move Dirk, and a sword on the left side that you must tap to help Dirk attack or defend himself from villains. You must find all of the special items in order to beat the game.

Features include a trailer of the game that summarizes the events up until this time and the ability to play either the classic game, or the director’s cut, which has an alternate ending.

This game is significantly easier to play than the original iOS game of Dragon’s Lair. In the first game, you had to swipe your finger across the screen at just the right time in order to move the story along. It was practically impossible to get far without spending a lot of anxious time trying and retrying the same segment until you got it right, only to fail at the next point. In this sequel, the movement and attack are easy to see and only require a simple tap. You must still have impeccable timing, but that just makes it challenging, instead of irritating.

Overall, Dragon’s Lair 2: Time Warp is better than the first, looks amazing and offers hours of enjoyment for anyone that remembers what a hit it was back in the day. Pick this game up if you want to go back in time, literally (through Dirk) and figuratively.
