Groovie Pig Hits The App Store

June 3, 2011
A new rhythm-based platformer has hit the App Store, it's called Groovie Pig (and if you own an iPad, Groovie Pig HD). The game looks to reinvent traditional platforming gameplay by adding attacks based on rhythm. The game has you control a purple pig as you take on 10 levels. The art-style of the game is quite colorful and interesting. There is also a nice variety to the levels ranging from tropical to snowy landscapes. The game's controls are based on virtual arrows that you have at your disposal to direct this "groovie pig." Judging from the screens, the game appears to be geared toward left-handed players. This is because unlike most platformers, the left and right arrows are on the right side of the screen, with the up and down arrows on the left. The down arrow is used to duck under small spaces, according to the app description. The game has a fun and quirky storyline. The name of this purple pig is Leelah; here is more info about the adventure she is about to undertake (from the app description):
Leelah is a very groovy pig. When she goes on vacations to Hawaii, she finds out that on this beautiful island lives an evil chef that loves to cook and eat pork. Now you have to help Leelah to escape. Leelah will have to travel around the world to avoid being cooked and to keep on grooving.
Although the game only offers 10 levels it still looks like a fun title to check out. It is also a breath of fresh air due to the integration of music through rhythm-based platforming. Groovie Pig is available on the App Store for iPhone and costs $1.99. Groovie Pig Hd is available on the App Store for iPad and costs $4.99.
