Can iCloud Resurrect Your Old MobileMe Accounts?

Do you have an expired MobileMe account name you'd still like to use? You're in for some good news: nearly ALL of those old MobileMe accounts seem to have already made it to iCloud.
Now, remember, iCloud is totally free, whereas MobileMe is (was) $99/year. So now, without having to pay a cent, you'll be able to re-access those email, storage and calendar accounts. Even better, they actually work right now-- that is, if you have iCloud-enabled software (such as a beta of iOS 5 or OS X Lion). If not, you'll need to wait until iCloud arrives this fall.
Unfortunately, it's been reported that any account already transferred to iCloud is also made unusable via the Web; none of the me.com web apps will work with your old username and password. But hey, since you didn't have access to those accounts anyway, it's not so bad. We don't even know for sure if Apple will make iCloud web apps to replace the MobileMe pages, but it's reasonable to assume they will.
It's nice to see Apple looking out for those of us who ditched our MobileMe accounts after the first year. Fortunately for everyone, this fall we'll all be able to unearth those 3-year old, spam-filled @me.com inboxes--for free! Huzzah!
