Tempo Pro ($0.99) by Performance Audio is a clever little metronome app that lets you set 50 different bleeps, clicks and thuds to a musical time signature. Although unbelievably unnecessary, this app is fun to play with. The basic metronome also works great, so you can have a digital metronome at a fraction of the cost of a real one.
The app offers 50 different sound effects ranging from normal metronome sounds like, clicks and wood blocks, to hilarious and unusual sounds like orchestra hits and punches. In the settings section, you can change the beats and their accents under the sound effects feature. You can also set the device to sleep, just in case you forget to turn off you iPhone mid-rehearsal. If you have an iPhone 4, you can set the camera flash to blink with the accent beat.
The metronome has a big button that is easy to hit when you are about to rock out and only have a second to start the timing. You can change the accent beat according to your style and you can increase and decrease the beats per minute from 1 to 225. The app displays the musical term for each range of timing, like Adagio or Prestissimo. You can also change the meter from 1/4 time all the way up to 12/8 time.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how many features this $0.99 app has to offer. It is a well-made digital metronome, but also offers hours of entertainment with its additional sound effects. When you think about how much a digital metronome device costs, you are getting the bargain of a lifetime with Tempo Pro.
