The concept of this app is a bit confusing. The developers call it a music lesson, but it is more like a game than anything else. However, it is still a fun way to learn some traditional piano tunes.
The first thing you will do is pick a category: classical, popular or Christmas. From there you will have your choice of 10 songs in that genre. Once you have decided on a song you can pick the speed at which the song should be presented to you. You can pick either half speed, three-quarter speed, or full speed. When the song begins, a series of glowing circles begin to descend from the top of the screen. At this point, the lesson becomes something more akin to Guitar Hero. You must play the note that the circle is falling into the line of. Each circle represents a different note, and some are close together, implying that you should play those notes faster. Although it seems like a game, you do not score points for your accomplishments.
Understanding where the rings lie on the keyboard can be tricky at first. Timing is awkward until you become familiar with the song, but there is an auto play feature that allows you to hear each tune. None of the songs are particularly complicated. So you will not find yourself frustrated with the learning experience.
Overall, this is a fun app. You could spend hours practicing songs, honing your skills and becoming an expert on each tune. Other than the fact that you don’t get points, this app is more like a game than a music learning device. I doubt that the skills you will learn in Glow Piano Lessons will transfer over to a real piano playing experience that well, but you will sure have fun trying.
