PogoPlug, an intriguing piece of software that allows "local" access to your hard drives from over the Web, just released its first major update, adding several new features.
PogoPlug is unique in that it allows your drives, and all their contents, to be seen as though they were connected directly to your laptop, iOS or Android device like a NAS drive. Because it's all software, it works with just about any hard drive and media format your device already supports. This makes it perfect for streaming movies, music and anything else when you're away from home. You can even work with attached printers, though we haven't tested printing from iOS.
The PogoPlug update for iOS fixes many bugs and dramatically improves the speed of searches. It also adds OneView, a neat feature that automatically hides any duplicate content across your array of shared drives. This makes it a lot easier to browse through thousands of files quickly. Couple with this with optimizations for the iPhone and iPad displays, and you've got the makings of a great streaming system -- your own personal iCloud.
PogoPlug is free to view documents and other media, but costs $29 for video or music streaming. It's available now on the App Store.
