Tilt Your iOS Device To Race Through A Tunnel

June 19, 2011

Boost 3D ($1.99) by Jonathan Lanis is a racing game without the racer. You zip along a sterile white tube in an unseen vehicle. Colored pathways will soon appear, indicating that an obstacle is just ahead on that path. The obstacles are either blocks or columns that stretch across the tube's diameter. But, this game is not about taking your time to avoid the obstacles. It's all about finding boost strips to go even faster.

This game is quick to pick up and even quicker to die. Using the default controls at first resulted in numerous restarts. After I went into the options and inverted the controls (making the movement reflect the way I tilted my iPad), I had much greater success.

Luckily, the time between crashing and restarting is only a second. If it was any longer, crashing would be an aggravation. Once you start getting good at it, you can use OpenFeint or Game Center to add your scores to the leaderboard, or race against others. I don't consider myself a fan of racing games, but Boost 2 was a welcome change to my usual gaming fare.

As long as you don't mind dying in many times in quick succession, you'll eventually overcome the learning curve and start earning higher scores. Hitting the boost strips is essential for not only going faster, but also surviving an encounter with an obstacle.

This game helps you appreciate how much effort it took Lando to fly the Millennium Falcon through the Death Star.
