Fling Bricks And Shoot Moles To Save The Princess In Brick Bow HD

June 24, 2011

Brick Bow HD ($3.99) by Caffeinated Games is a new puzzle shooter game for the iPhone and iPad. Though the graphics are not very appealing, gameplay may surprise you. Slingshot bricks at moles, giant trees, and even more bricks to save the princess.

Upon opening the app, I was hit with some very loud music that was worse than old school Atari tunes. I was more startled than impressed, but some may enjoy it. The sound affects are very Mario-esque as is the beginning scene where you see a small shadow yelling for help (reminiscent of Princess Peach).

There are two worlds that you may choose from: regular or endless. When you play the regular levels, you can choose grasslands mode or bonus mode. Bonus mode is my favorite because it includes two different types of gameplay: flinging bricks at moles to destroy them or collecting waves of coins. Grasslands mode, however, is more of a typical level-by-level experience.

The goal of the game is to fling bricks to destroy moles, collect coins, or destroy more bricks. If you're playing in normal mode, it's similar to Tetris; you must match the bricks up with three or more of the same color to get rid of them. For every mode, you fling your bricks as if they're in a slingshot to propel them at whatever happens to be in front of you. Along the way, you will also collect coins and jewels to use in the store.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like this app takes advantage of multi-tasking. Also, when pressing the buttons on the main screen, there is a two second lag before it registers. The graphics aren't that great, but the game is actually pretty addictive. If you like puzzle shooters, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

It's currently $3.99 in the App Store for this universal app, which is a bit steep in my opinion, but use your own discretion.
