Play With The Colors Of Your Photos With Color Range
Color Range ($1.99) by SSA Mobile LLC is a photo editing app that allows you to selectively color your photos while desaturating the rest.
Making only one color show up in your photos is a great way to make it look stylish. But usually it's a pain to find all the spots in which the color shows up and then to desaturate the rest of the image. Color Range hopes to help you alleviate the pain of doing that in your photos.
Once you get past that obnoxiously bright splash screen, you'll find yourself in the app's main screen. From here, you can then import a photo to the app using the camera or from your Photo Library.
When you have your photo in, there are several things you can do with it in Color Range. The main one that you will want to try is the color range option. This is represented by the big C button on the top toolbar.
From here, you can select a spot of color on your photograph and adjust the tolerance level. This will result in the photo only showing the color you specified, and the rest will appear in grayscale. Adjusting the tolerance level will change the appearance of the colors. Once you're satisfied with the appearance of the photo, you can apply the changes and go back to the main screen.
Another option you can use is the Brush option. However, this didn't work for me like I would expect it to.
Unlike other apps like ColorSplash, the brush would be very glitchy. Even if I swiped my finger on the screen in a straight line across the image, it would only register a few spots, and that's where desaturation would occur. Each time I tried to save it, the app would crash.
The Brush option is very unstable and unusable at this point in time. It was frustrating that it didn't deliver like other apps have.
A Hue can be applied to your photo, which will change the color of the selected areas. There's a slider at the bottom that you can use to find the hue that you want. Depending on the photo, these can look good, or just plain terrible.
The last option is to apply a filter to your selective color photo. There are several options for filters, and for some, like Color Adjust, you can tweak the settings to your liking.
When you're done with a photo, you can save it to your Photo Album, or share it by email, Twitter, or Facebook. The Settings for the app give you options for the maximum image export size and management for your social networks.
I wanted to like Color Range, but aside from the "color range" feature, I was disappointed by the rest of the app. It felt glitchy and buggy overall, especially with the Brushes. I repeatedly tried the brushes and each time it would not register my swipes and also crash on all save attempts.
