Get The Latest Showings Of Summer Blockbusters With The New Showtimes App

June 25, 2011

Showtimes (Free) by Magnolia Labs, Inc. is an app to help you find the showtimes of local theaters.

It's summer, so you probably know what means--you'll be making trips to the movie theater a lot. There's the summer blockbusters (this year filled with plenty of comic book heroes), air conditioning for hot summer days, and good fun to be had by relaxing with friends and family at the movies. You have an iPhone, so you probably use that to look up showtimes on-the-go. There's a new free app that gives you a gorgeous experience while you hunt down the next convenient showing of Super 8 (or whatever movie you want to see).

Showtimes will open up and immediately prompt you for your location. This makes it easily fetch some theaters that are within the vicinity. However, if you're the type that doesn't like location services, you can deny it and add theaters manually.

The main screen will feature a beautiful graphic at the top that is similar to the marquee of old-fashioned movie theaters, and list theaters and showtimes underneath.

You'll probably have multiple theaters near you, depending on your location, but you are able to flick back and forth between theaters.

You will see the name of the movie on the left side and then see the showtimes on the right. If a movie title is longer, you can drag left-to-right on the title to see the rest of it. Ratings are also displayed. Movie times will be divided into four sections: Early, Afternoon, Late Afternoon, and Evening/Night. All the times will be displayed to fit in these cells.

Times can be refreshed, and the "i" button will bring you to a list of your current theaters. You can add more theaters and even reorder the ones you currently have by dragging them.

The only thing I'm disappointed in is the fact that Showtimes will not show you showtimes for another day besides the current day. So if you were planning to see a movie tomorrow, you wouldn't be able to see the times until, well, tomorrow. This is rather inconvenient, and I hope that the developer can change this in the future.

I also had the app crash on me once while trying to manually search for more theaters, but this only happened once. So there may be some stability issues, but for the most part, the app works fine.

Showtimes is beautiful and well-designed, but it really needs the ability to look at showtimes for different days. This is a critical flaw and really takes away from the point of having an app for movie showtimes.

Despite this, Showtimes is still a free app, so check it out and let us know how it works for you.
