Allow Weathery To Make Your Forecast Better And Brighter

June 17, 2011

Weathery ($0.99) by Auxiliary Design Co. is an elegant and simple weather app for the iPhone.

If you don’t want to waste time sifting through pages and pages of information to get the basics, this app is for you. Not only is the interface intuitive and crisp, all of the information you need is right there in front of you.

As you open the app, you’re greeted by a simple, yet beautiful display and asked to allow the app to access your current location. Let’s add some other locations of our own and some for fun! Because what kind of weather app review would this be without adding Cupertino to the list?

The side list can be easily scrolled through to choose the time of day, while the bottom allows you to tap on a specific day. This may seem like a lot of forecast for such a simplistic app, but all of your information will be presented on the same screen. No fussing with multiple pages and constant tapping to find what you need. You can even swipe to view forecasts for your other locations.

Yes, there are other weather apps out there that focus on simplicity (e.g., Quick Weather, Shine), but they either don’t have enough information, or the information is so buried that you eventually give up. The point of Weathery is to have hourly forecasts right at your fingertips at all times—not buried within the app, multiple touches and swipes away. The app is crisp, clean, and precise. Unlike some weather apps in the App Store, it is pretty accurate with the forecasts, as it is powered by WeatherBug.

Unfortunately, my favorite feature has yet to come. Although the app shows you when it’s sunny, cloudy, rainy, or stormy (I’ve decided to keep snow out of this), you will notice the lack of precipitation detail. In a coming update, the developers plan on adding an option to click on, say, “Mostly Cloudy” and bring up a detailed view with wind speed and other percentages.

For instance, if it says “Chance of Rain,” you can click on it and it will tell you what percent chance there is. For me, this is what will allow me to rid myself of four other weather apps. This update will make me a very happy camper.

All in all, Weathery had me instantly impressed and pleased. However, nearing the end of this review, I experienced multiple crashes at start up. I was very disappointed with this, as I truly enjoyed this app and think it has great potential. I was finally able to open and use it again and hope the crashing won’t reoccur.

So, pay attention to updates and reviews, as I assume this bug will be squashed soon. After all, this may be the new go-to weather app (especially once it’s updated). I’m sure you’ll want to check it out. For one dollar, it’s worth it!
