Could Apple Be Hinting At 3G On The iPod Touch?

July 24, 2011
The plot thickens regarding the next generation Apple iPod touch, as new screenshots have surfaced. The iOS 5 beta has a 3G/GPS toggle switch that appears on the current WI-Fi only iPod touch.

The news comes from 9to5Mac and is giving credence to the rumors of 3G capabilities on the next generation iPod touch. Here is their take on these screenshots:
The obvious explanation for the screenshot above, taken on a current Retina iPod touch with the latest iOS 5 Beta, is that Apple messed up by leaving the ‘Cellular’ data option in the iPod software.
Is this an obvious explanation? Or does Apple have something else up their sleeve? Recently, I wrote an article on the rumors regarding the iPod touch getting 3G in the near future. It started quite a debate and our readers left several comments. Is Apple dropping a hint on a new upcoming iPod? After all, it is the 10-year anniversary of the device so it would be no surprise if they added some great features. But will it really be 3G? I stand behind my previous opinion, I don’t really see this as a possibility. It is more likely that Apple will release an inexpensive iPhone that will utilize a prepaid plan. This may entice some iPod touch users to jump over for the full experience. Who knows for sure what will happen? The rumors are frustrating, but intriguing. Apple is masterful at driving us all crazy with their secrets, and I would not be surprised if leaving in the toggles was intentional.
