EA's Origin: New Plans Unveiled For iOS Customers
July 8, 2011
Ever since EA announced its direct-to-consumer digital project, Origin, for mobile and PC users, we’ve been left wondering what it meant for iOS users. Today, we found out the answer, at this week's EA Summer Showcase event in San Francisco, according to Brad Nicholson at touchArcade.
Because Apple wouldn’t take too kindly with EA selling iOS apps from a separate store, EA will instead offer an Open Feint-like interface that sits on top of each of its iOS games. This way, iOS users will still be able to connect to their PC and other mobile device friends.
Accordingly, this interface will:
“have its own high score rankings and achievements, it’ll demand its own friends list, and it’ll allow you to launch other EA titles from the interface without having to switching to your dashboard.”Therefore, coupled with Apple’s own Game Center product, users will be able to see “what your pals are doing with their PC Origin accounts as well as their iOS accounts.” In other words, Origin for iOS will be a lot like Xbox Live only for the iPhone/iPod touch or iPad. No timeframe was announced for when EA will implement its Origin solution for iOS. What are your thoughts? Are you happy with EA’s decision to essentially recreate Game Center for its own games, or do you wish they’d figure out a way to utilize the real thing? Let us know by using the comments below.
