For First Time, App Downloads Overtake Song Downloads

July 15, 2011
Three years after the first app was downloaded and installed from the App Store, the total number of apps purchased has exceeded those of music. This news comes as the result of a new asymo survey released earlier this week. Launched in 2008, the App Store has now surpassed 15 billion downloads, a feat accomplished in exactly three years. Meanwhile, it took six years and 10 months for songs to reach the same milestone. As such, asymo has now concluded that there have been more apps downloaded than songs. Accordingly, there are now at least 31 million apps downloaded per month versus an average of 12 million songs purchased. Including books, the App Store now delivers around 44 million new content downloads per month. These are phenomenal numbers and show just how popular iTunes and the App Store actually are. Just think, three years ago the App Store wasn't even around! What are you thought? Leave your comments below.
