MovieCam For iPad 2, Gives Your Movies Style

July 11, 2011

MovieCam ($2.99) by Digital Staircase Inc. is an image-altering video camera app made exclusively for the iPad 2. It offers nine different effects that are applied in real-time allowing you to create interesting videos to share with friends and family.

To start recording with MovieCam, just open the app. The camera function appears and you can select the effects you like from here. Even using the “Normal” effect, you have the ability to adjust contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. The camera has an 8X digital zoom and allows you to apply effects and record video with both the front and back cameras of the iPad. You can even choose whether to record your video in 640x480 or 1280x720 resolution with the back-facing camera.

To choose a different effect, just tap the wand icon at the bottom right of the camera and the nine effects appear on screen with a real-time view of what the video will look like. You can choose from: Gothic, Vintage, Oil Painting, Moonlit, Normal, Newscast, Video Game, Golden Rod or Romantic. Each effect has its own picture adjustment. For example, if your effect is Video Game, you can adjust the pixilation and 8-bit color by tapping the three-colored bar icon next to the wand. You can also increase the reds in Gothic, decrease the brush stroke in Oil Painting, and adjust the fine-tuning of a variety of settings for each of the effects.

Overall, this app is tremendously fun and easy to use. Once you have recorded your vampire epic with MovieCam’s Gothic effect, you can save it to your camera roll and import it into iMovie for editing. Because you are able to use and change the effects in real-time, you can see exactly how the final product will look. The price is right and the features are plentiful. If you have an iPad 2, you will want this app.
