Let Your Kids Learn Languages With Mr Mouse

July 6, 2011

Mr Mouse ($1.99) by So Ouat is a cute game that teaches spelling to young children. Mr. Mouse is sleepwalking across the screen on blocks, and several of the blocks are missing. To prevent Mr. Mouse from falling, children must correctly spell the object that he is dreaming about.

The object is displayed in a thought bubble, and is pronounced if tapped. Depending on the level, letters are shown in the spaces for the missing bricks. The first level shows all the correct letters shaded, the second shows the first and last letters, and the last shows no letters. In the first level, Mr. Mouse doesn’t fall but in subsequent levels he can. There are three options for words; first words, fruits & vegetables, and animals. The first two are free, but the animal package is an additional $0.99.

The game is unique because it caters to children who speak or are learning multiple languages. The game has words for English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese. It operates in one language but can be switched to others my spinning the language wheel in the bottom right corner of the screen. The picture remains the same but the word’s spelling and pronunciation are changed.

Words in the game can be spelled in capital or lowercase letters. In other languages accent marks are also included in words. I think children under five would really enjoy this game. Even so, older children even adults may enjoy this app for its educational value if they are trying to learn another language.

The only downside to this app is the quantity of words. I would like to see more categories in later versions.

Overall, I highly recommend Mr Mouse to parents of young children. Learning a language is easiest when you are young, so help your kids get a head-start by learning a few of the basic words in multiple languages.
