PlayerX - Play Any Video Format ($0.99) by ColorfulApp is a media player that allows you to transfer almost any media file to your iPhone from a computer. It is easy to do and doesn’t take very long. This is a great way to easily get files from your friends without having to jump through a lot of hoops. It is on sale for $0.99 (regularly $2.99) for a limited time.

PlayerX lets you use a variety of file formats, without conversion, and fits them all into one app for easy access. Additionally, you can download media files from any computer onto you iPhone and transfer them to Dropbox or send them in an email, essentially allowing unlimited file transfers with little fuss.

When you open the app, you will see a blank screen with a plus (+) symbol in the upper left. This is how you add video or audio content. When you select the icon, you will be asked whether you would like to use Wi-Fi or a USB cable to transfer your files. If you choose to use a USB cable, you will be prompted to access the computer through iTunes using file sharing. If you choose to use the local wireless Internet, you will be prompted to enter an address in the computer’s web browser. This address will link you to PlayerX’s own file uploading page. From here, you can add videos and audio from your computer and it will send it wirelessly to your iPhone.

I recommend using the Wi-Fi connection because it will be easier to grab files from any computer. I didn’t have an opportunity to try the USB connection on someone else’s computer, but I would assume that you couldn’t use their iTunes account to sync your own iPhone.

Depending on your wireless Internet provider, it may take a while to complete a download. I had to wait a fairly long time to download a 22 minute video from home and the playback was awful. However, when I was at work, I downloaded a song in seconds and the video that was lagging so badly at home played seamlessly at work. I’m not exactly sure why the video quality changed, but the download time is likely connected to Internet speed.

Once you have downloaded the files you want into PlayerX, you can either watch them directly within the app, or send them to Dropbox. You can do this right from your iPhone and, when you get home, your new movies will be waiting for you. Keep in mind that Dropbox has limitations on how much you can upload, unless you upgrade your account.

Overall, this app is worth every cent if you have some patience. You can access any computer and download any video or audio files to your iPhone. You can use the app to playback the media, or you can save the file to Dropbox to access on whatever computers you have the Dropbox application on. It is basically a flash drive with a playback feature.
