Block Breaker 3 Unlimited Is A Refreshing Twist On The Arcade Classic
Block Breaker 3 Unlimited ($0.99) by Gameloft is the latest iteration of the Block Breaker series. This isn't just a new version of the popular arcade game that you've probably played countless times before, it's a complete overhaul of how Breakout clones should be.
If you've played this traditional game before, then you should be familiar with it already. You just have to use the pad at the bottom to reflect the ball up at the bricks to clear the stage to clear it.
Block Breaker 3 Unlimited features stunning graphics that are optimized for the Retina Display, catchy tunes, and plenty of levels to keep you entertained.
There are seven locations to play through, and each have multiple levels. To advance to the next level, you will have to clear the previous one. There will be [epic] boss battles awaiting you at the end of each of the seven locations.
While you may think you know Block Breaker already, you're wrong. This new version of the game features innovative level designs that are unlike anything you've seen before in a Breakout clone. There are switches to hit, gates to go through, and scrolling levels that add a new twist to this traditional arcade game.
There are two types of control in the game: Touch and Gyroscope. There are two variations of the gyroscope controls, labeled A and B. The only difference seems to be the sensitivity of them. Personally, I found the touch controls to be easier to use, and I ended up not missing the ball as much.
As you play through the levels, there are plenty of power-ups hidden in bricks that you can collect to aid you. Money can be obtained throughout the game, which you can use to buy pad upgrades and new bonuses and powers in the shop, as well as gifts.
In addition to the basic campaign mode, there are eight more game modes to unlock: Endless, Block Master, Time Attack, Crazy Mode, Versus Mode, Frenzy, Boss Rush, and Survival.
To unlock these, you will have to collect each of the hidden gifts in each location. For Survival, you will have to finish all the levels perfectly.
With a total of 100 levels in the normal campaign and the eight additional game modes, there is plenty of replay value in Block Breaker 3 Unlimited.
I would only hope for some Game Center integration in the future for leaderboards and achievements. Currently, this game uses Gameloft's own Live service.
If you're a fan of Breakout games, or want a refreshing twist on an old favorite, then make sure to give Block Breaker 3 Unlimited a try. There's a lot to be had for only a dollar.
This review was for the iPhone version of Block Breaker 3 Unlimited. There is also an iPad version for the same price of $0.99.
