Indulge In Some Spooky Entertainment With Brave Ghost HD
Brave Ghost HD ($1.99) by Nebula Soft Inc. is a physics based puzzle adventure game where your goal is to save the poor, big-eyed baby ghosts from danger by guiding them home to their gravestones.
Gameplay is very similar to other physics-based games, such as Angry Birds. All motion and movement is controlled with a single finger. Tap anywhere on the screen and move your finger up and down to aim your ghost, and then slide left and right to control momentum. A handy arrow lets you know what direction the ghost is going to fly in, and an included meter displays the level of force you’ve chosen.
As the brave ghost, it’s your job to collect all the three baby ghosts in each level and deliver them safely to the gravestone. The controls are easily adjustable and simple to use, but there are plenty of obstacles that make gameplay more challenging.
Moving around can be deceptively difficult, since the ghost tends to get stuck in never-ending orbits that lead right into harms way, and once launched, his path can’t be readjusted. You will need to calculate just the right arc before you release the brave ghost off into the graveyard. Collecting one baby ghost is a simple task and will let you progress to the next level, gathering three of them is a serious test of skill and patience.
There are two kinds of vortexes, dark and light, that attract and repel you respectively, so you’ve got to plan the best way to navigate around them. Other obstacles include lightning bars which will electrocute you, fire cannons that shoot fireballs, and big, bad, green ghosts that will try to thwart your rescue efforts.
If your attempts at getting to the grave are unsuccessful, a path of dots displays your previous move so you don’t make the same mistakes more than once. If a particular level is extra frustrating, the game provides you with hints that reveal the proper trajectory, but unfortunately they don’t give the required force, so you still may have to experiment to solve the puzzle.
For $.99 in app, you can buy an unlimited number of hints and breeze your way right through the entire game. If you don’t want to spend the cash, you can still skip levels to get through the tough spots.
Currently there are three worlds: graveyard, church, and underworld. Each world has twenty levels, and new worlds are unlocked by saving a set number of baby ghosts.
As with many games these days, Brave Ghost features Game Center integration with leaderboards, and there are 12 achievements to unlock.
I am a fan of the graphics in Brave Ghost HD, which are adorable, and the quick gameplay, which kept the game fun. The music never gets obnoxious, and I loved the way my ghost shouted “YAHOO!” every time I launched him into the air.
With the hint system and level skipping available, this game is suitable for a wide range of ages and skill levels. Of course, liberal use of hints and the level skipping button will make the game significantly shorter. To get the most out of it, aim to collect all three ghosts on each level and unlock all of the achievements.
Brave Ghost HD does tend to get repetitive, because there’s not a lot of variation in obstacles or gameplay, but that’s true of most of the physics-based puzzlers available in the App Store. I enjoyed sitting down and playing this for about a half hour at a time, but any longer than that and I got bored.
There’s also not much of a story here, so I didn’t get as involved in this game as I did with Angry Birds. I doubt you’ll be seeing Brave Ghost merchandise anytime soon without a more in-depth experience.
