Team Up Or Go Solo To Destroy Opponents One Turn At A Time In Hero Teams

July 24, 2011

Hero Teams ($0.99) by Little Games Ltd is an action strategy game for the iPhone in which you take opponents out one turn at a time. Just set up your teams and you're well on your way to owning the maps and killing off your enemies.

When I started this game, I had no idea what to expect or what I was doing. I knew this was a turn-based strategy (TBS) game, but was surprised to find out it was very much like Gunbound, and I love Gunbound.

If you've never played a game similar to this, I'll give you a brief rundown of how it works. Your goal is to destroy the other team (or in the case of a quick match, the other individual). You take turns throwing bombs and shooting things at each other until one team, or person, loses all life. Then, you come out victorious.

To start, you'll want to view your heroes and set up teams. The only team you can set up to begin with is one consisting of multiples of the same character as you only have one character unlocked. There are 25 characters to unlock total.

You can move by tapping the arrows on the left of the screen and jump by tapping your character. Click the weapons button to bring up your artillery options. Your choice of weapons range from teleportation to grenade launchers, and each hero has different weaponry.

Once you have chosen your weapon, move the aiming arrow with your finger. This is the direction in which you will shoot. Pressing the fire button will, obviously, fire the weapon; but the longer you hold it down, the more power it will have and the further it will go.

The catch is that you will slowly destroy the terrain as your weapons hit it. For instance, you could technically bomb your opponent into a hole to prevent them from having a good attack angle.

There are 20 maps and 50 levels in campaign mode. You can also just play quick matches or go head-to-head with friends via Bluetooth. This begs the question: When will Hero Teams have Game Center support? I also think an iPad version of this game would be excellent.

The artwork is hand drawn and the graphics are well done. Even the music is incredible. If you ever played games like Gunbound, or just enjoy a good TBS then you'll want to give it a try. It's only one dollar in the App Store.
