Love Retro Arcade Games? Give Megablast A Try!
Megablast ($0.99) by MamaGaming Ltd is an arcade shooter for the iPhone that will keep you on your toes. With beautiful graphics and fast-paced gameplay, this game will be enjoyable for an unlimited amount of time.
It was a bit difficult for me to get the hang of this game initially. I kept losing before I barely began. I came to notice that when you destroy all of the balls on the screen — and there aren't any more spawning — you lose. Game over. So, do your best to keep shooting them so they multiply and keep you in business.
There are three modes that you can choose from: sprint, arcade, and dodge. These are pretty self-explanatory, but for those of you who aren't very game-familiar I will give you a brief rundown.
Play in sprint mode to get the best score in a minute. Arcade mode is all about how long you can last. Dodge mode is about avoiding objects and outlasting your surroundings.
To shoot the things in your path, just tap the bottom right side of the screen. You can control the path of your spaceship one of two ways (you choose). You can play in tilt mode or go retro style with joystick mode. I find the joystick awkward. When given the choice of utilizing the accelerometer, I will almost always choose it. This game is no different; tilt controls work perfectly.
There are many power ups to collect, turbo boosts and time additions, but beware the ball with the skull on it. Because, you know, typically a skull equals death and that is definitely the case here.
There are unlimited levels and Game Center support with many achievements. You can even share your score on Facebook.
The only issue I had with the app was some minor lag when pressing a button to advance to the next screen.
Megablast is in the App Store for $0.99, so if you love arcade shooters, you may want to give it a go. I found it pretty difficult to master and was a bit annoyed by the minor lag, but overall it was well done.
