Since Minesweeper's origins in the 1960s, the puzzler has been ported to many platforms. MineSweeper Touch contains three preset levels in which your goal is to flag the locations of all the mines on the board and clear the spaces around them. The game starts with an empty grid of boxes. When you tap on a square, a number will appear that represents the number of mines surrounding it. A custom level mode lets you create a board with up to 72 rows and columns and over 3,000 mines.
Speed is a crucial part of minesweeper, and SkyPaw has included several features to help high scorers cut down on time. By default, a button in the bottom right of the screen shows whether or not you're placing a flag. When playing, you can also tap and hold on a square to drop a flag. Double tapping a numbered square on the grid will automatically clear the squares around it. These new features definitely save you time and make the Game Center leaderboards more competitive.
Regardless of the size of the board that you select, the game will zoom in to where a nine by nine grid is showing. You can pinch and zoom in so that everything is up to two times bigger. A button on the bottom right corner allows you to zoom out and look at the entire board. You can also choose which section to focus your screen on. This makes the game compatible for everyone, including people with larger fingers.
From loading times to graphics, MineSweeper Touch runs very smoothly. The game saves automatically when you exit and you can resume at any time. A swift interface that is free of any lag makes the classic minesweeper game feel brand new again. The Retina display ready graphics are sleek and polished, even while zooming in.
The extra elements included in MineSweeper Touch elevate this app above its competition. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, the game's custom mode will make it possible for you to enjoy a puzzle on your level. Gameplay is easy to learn and very user-friendly.
As well-made as the game is currently, I'd like to see some further options added in future updates. While the speed optimization features may be useful to some players, others may find it annoying that accidentally double tapping a square ends their game. There should be a way to turn off these features.
MineSweeper Touch is a free application with in-game advertisements at the top of the screen. These aren't too distracting, but you can upgrade to the pro version via an in-app purchase of $0.99. For no initial cost, Minesweeper Touch is worth downloading, especially if you enjoy Minesweeper or other puzzle games.
