Nobody Said Harvesting Obscurium Was Easy

Nobody Said Harvesting Obscurium Was Easy

QuBIT ($0.99) by Secret Sauce is a racer game set in a far-away galaxy (but not a long time ago).

QuBit is a robot in charge of mining a rare mineral called Obscurium. The best way to harvest it? Smashing into it, of course.

You will need to match colored Obscurium crystals that correspond to the “QuBs” (small cubes) orbiting you. Matching all of the QuBs results in a combo, which is important for finishing each wave. Taking too long will get you caught up in a power surge, which drains your energy and speed.

Each wave ends with a bonus wave, where you need to collect as many crystals as you can. Watch out for spike mines and depleted crystals, which will damage you.

Time is your main obstacle, though. Your energy is constantly being drained, so you have to keep working toward combos.

I highly recommend playing the tutorial first. While the controls only involve tilting and tapping the screen, you’ll need to become familiar with the specifics of what to do. The tutorial does a great job getting you acclimated while simultaneously throwing you into the action. I actually went back to the tutorial a second time to learn more about power surges.

My major complaint is the lack of a save button. You have to restart from the very beginning if you fail to complete a wave. The main objective is to beat your highest score.

While I certainly acknowledge that this is a valid style of gameplay, it’s quite disheartening to make it to wave four, only to have to go back to the first. My motivation for trying to reach any higher diminishes. The steering also feels a bit loose. Trying to navigate in a straight line became dicey for me.

The great graphics and unique twist on a classic racer still makes this a game to check out.

Just have a little patience when you fail a wave.
