Livestock Used As Golf Balls In Rolling Ranch

July 3, 2011

Rolling Ranch ($1.99) by Clarin Global S.A. combines farming and miniature golf, though the livestock used as golf balls are far from miniature.

The opening cutscene tells the story of how pink toxic sludge oozed into a nearby farm’s water supply. Some of the animals drink the goop and poof they’re inflated! How on earth could these rotund animals be of any use? Miniature golf, of course.

The first round starts with the portly pig. Pull back on him and you’ll see a red arrow pointing forward for direction and white circles behind to indicate pulling strength. Let go, and watch your piggie roll. Guide him toward the barn at the end of the course to win.

You’ll want to choose your shots carefully because you are limited in both moves and time. Failure results in a “Bad luck partner!” and a chance to restart the level.

What miniature golf course would be complete without bank shots, rough spots, and windmills? Or even slappy pink tentacles? Looks like the toxic sludge had affected more than just the animals. New obstacles keep appearing, which keeps the gameplay from feeling stale. Some levels give you infinite moves, but limited time, while other levels require you to collect all of the golden horseshoe bonuses, which are usually optional.

The folksy music is definitely appropriate for the game, but it gets old really quick. Muting helps, though you do lose out on the “Yeehaa!” exclaimed each time you win a level. The cartoony graphics really work for this game, including the beginning movie.

Fans of miniature golf (or even billiards) apps will definitely appreciate this quirky barnyard game. At $1.99, the price is a little steep, though a lite version is available if your appetite is whetted enough to check it out.
