Sushi Star ($1.99) by Tapiki, LLC. is a food building game, but not like Cooking Mama. It is in a category all its own. The graphics are cute, the sound track is fitting and game’s replay value is through the roof.

In the first round, you are taught how to place the ingredients on the sushi rice. There is a conveyer belt with sushi rice laid out, waiting for the proper topping. Instead of having to memorize which order the ingredients must follow to go into a recipe, there is a partially transparent image of what goes on the roll. There are times when a roll will have multiple ingredients, but the second or third item will not appear until you have properly dragged and dropped the first one.

There are six different levels that you can unlock. Each level represents a different country where you will try to become a sushi star. Each level offers three difficulties which increase how much money you make and how much fame you gain. You will also play through four rounds on each level, each one getting slightly harder, testing your sushi-making capabilities. There are also prizes to unlock that require you to do such things as, make 100 bad sushi rolls or 50 dark sushi rolls.

The game is cleverly written. There are things you can or must do to get through the game that are funny. For example, you must complete the second level with at least one star to unlock the third level, or you can “make Sueko fuming mad (Hint: she hates bad sushi).” If you want to win the Apple prize, you must make at least 50 rotten sushi. Basically, you win a prize for failing. There are lots of funny little extras that make this game even more fun to play.

Overall, this is an extraordinary game. It is fun and original. There is a high replay value and it is challenging. You can increase or decrease the challenge difficulty any time, even during the level you are playing. The price is reasonable. The graphics are cute. Add this game to your “play every day” folder because you will play it every day.
