Got Appointments Across The World? Try This New Alarm Clock App

August 19, 2011
I don't know what it is about the inescapable concept of timepiece engineering, but it seems to be a sort of prerequisite in our burgeoning digital culture that budding coders and designers address and reimagine our lowly, boring, standard old clocks. While many new ideas come in the form of physical units, iOS is proving a fertile proving ground for such endeavors as more and more time-telling apps hit the scene. One new app, Globaclock, has just been released; and, since we've been in contact with its creator, 13-year-old Adrien Truong, for quite some time over the course of development, we'd like to give the project a little bump. Explained simply, Globaclock attempts to condense the familiar, traditional series of regional wall clocks into a single analog presentation. To achieve this, selected cities are presented as hour hands, while the minutes and seconds tick (or, if you prefer, tock) by in the surrounding ring. Stylistically, Adrien's work is pretty straightforward; and that can be either good or bad, depending upon your expectations. As a first effort, it's strong and stable, but it'd be nice if the app offered more customization than mere color-switching of the various clock elements. The gray background and black clock-face are unchangeable and somewhat drab, but multiple alarms and a suite of 11 different fonts help make up for such oversights. Globaclock probably isn't the first clock to pull this off, but it is a reasonably well-executed realization of a reasonably unique approach to timepiece design. While the $1.99 price is a bit steep, keep in mind that the app is a universal binary, and you'll be helping a talented youngster earn a brighter coding future.
