Make Your iDevice The 8-Bit Gun You Always Wanted

Pixel Blaster ($0.99) by Rusty Moyher turns you iDevice into an 8-bit laser blaster.

This app is as straightforward as it gets. Once you select “Lock & Load” from the intro screen, you’re presented with your weapon.

Tap as furiously as you’d like to fire the gun. Shaking the device will shoot a charged shot. There is also the elusive “mega blast,” though I’ll let you find out how to activate it.

What else can you do? Nothing, really, outside of keeping track of your shots fired. You can also view how you stand in Game Center. All I can say is some people have way too much time on their hands.

This is by no means a killer app (unless you count killing imaginary baddies), but it is fun and you can always try the lite version first to see if it’s a fit for you.

I imagine its target audience would be middle school boys, cube warfare, or anyone interested in starting an 8-bit infantry.

The fact that there are hidden features to the gun makes the game interesting until at least you discover how to use them. This app definitely embraces retro video games with its pixelated graphics, chintzy sound effects, and intro music.
