Guide The Last Rocket To Save The Ship From The Cosmos

August 12, 2011

The Last Rocket ($2.99) by Shaun Inman is an 8-bit platformer puzzle game.

You are The Last Rocket, also known as Flip, and you must navigate through 64 rooms of fans, spikes, flames, mines, and many more obstacles. These just get in your way of collecting Memory Gears for the AMI, aka the Autonomous Mechanical Intelligence, before the ship is consumed by a collapsed star.

If you are a fan of retro 8-bit games, then you will feel right at home with the Last Rocket. The graphics are pixel perfect to represent the old-school NES games, and the various chiptunes capture the spirit you should remember from the 90s. One should pick up this title just for the graphics and music alone. However, there's more to the game than that, which sweetens the deal.

The game consists of various room that contain the gears that you must collect. However, there are all those obstacles that will be in your way. To move on to the next level, you will also need to reach the exit door that is usually across the room from you. A terminal unit can give you tips when you are in front of it.

To move Flip, simply tap on the screen to blast off. When he's in motion, another tap will reverse his direction. When you go into the fans from the opposite direction that they are blowing in, you can hover. To get going again, simply swipe in the direction you want to move Flip. If Flip is on solid ground, you can move him one space by swiping as well.

Some of the gears will be hidden, and you can see where they are by the dashed lines. Making Flip go over these will reveal the gears, and you will have to go back and collect it.

If you die, you don't need to worry about lives. You simply have to start the level over, but you can keep doing this as many times as necessary. There aren't really points to get, but the goal is to collect all of the gears for the AMI.

I found the game to be a pleasure to play. There are multiple endings and achievements to obtain, so there is some replay value to the game.

However, despite there being achievements, there does not seem to be any Game Center support to display these achievements. Hopefully that can change in the future.

The game is a bit expensive though, being priced at $2.99. It is thankfully, a universal game, so if you buy it, you can play on both your iPhone and iPad.

However, this appears to be a quality game, so I believe this price is fair if you are a big fan of retro games. The graphics are great and the chiptunes -- they're just like the old days! What's not to like?
