Quirky App Of The Day: iBottle

August 27, 2011
I like messages in a bottle because of their whimsical nature. I would love to be standing on a beach and notice a bottle washing up to shore with some obscure and cryptic message. It would probably just be a grocery list, but it would be thrilling nonetheless. Well, unless it was a plea for help before hunger and thirst drove the poor shipwrecked soul to insanity and then, eventual death. Regardless, iBottle captures the magic and whimsy of a message in a bottle without the dying pleas for assistance. With this app, you can invite your friends to participate. Soon, there will be bottles as far as the eye can see. They will probably contain snarky comments like: "if your refrigerator is running, you better start running too," or "share the electricity you invented." Or, possibly, "For a fun night of walks on the beach, long gazes at the star-filled skies and a long distance relationship, send your bottle to the third island on the right from the peninsula with the boulder." I would have a lot of fun throwing bottles into the sea with obscure treasure maps, and I would watch through binoculars while my fellow island-mates dig random holes. I might even put an empty box where the treasure should be so that they try it again sometime in the future with fresh hopes. The iBottle app lets you choose the background of your paper and the color of the bottle. Once you're done you can cast it into the sea and wait for your friends to send it back your way. If you're like me, then you're probably going to be staring at the blank, sea-filled screen for a while. The iBottle app is available on the App Store for the awesome price of FREE!
