Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad has gotten a recent update and is worth checking out by anyone who requires remote connections between an iDevice and a PC. Splashtop Remote desktop allows you to control your PC's screen and functions from the touch of your iPad. You connect over a network from your iPad to your PC, which gives you access to the computer's content from the iPad's display. Mac and Windows platforms are both supported.
This is especially useful for those who miss a file system on their iPad, or who want to use heavy duty apps like Final Cut Pro on it. With Splashtop Remote Desktop you can use all these apps right on the iPad and trick your PC into thinking you are in front of it.
The app has recently been updated to version 1.5.5.1 and improves some of its great features. The main thing updated is Internet discovery support. This is a feature that wasn't originally available with its launch, but was added due to user requests. It allows you to search your computer's network over a Wi-Fi connection based on Google's email services.
Previously you had to rely on staying near your local network to connect, or go through a complicated process to connect over a Wi-Fi by configuring your router.
An iPhone version of the app also came out not long ago and has been updated to the same version. Here is a list of all the added features from the latest update (taken from the app description):
Keep in mind to take advantage of this app, you need to download another application for the remote PC that you plan on connecting to. You also have to keep it up to date in order to take advantage of this latest version. You can currently grab Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad on the App Store for $4.99. The iPhone version costs $1.99 on the App Store.
- Improved Internet discovery now supports all registered users of Google services (even for email addresses that don’t end with gmail.com or googlemail.com)
- Updated to support iOS 5 beta
- Updated UI and translations
