Apple Distributes 9,000 Free iPads To Teachers
September 22, 2011
Apple has distributed thousands of refurbished first-generation iPads to teachers working in low-income communities across the U.S. The giveaway, which was coordinated by Teach for America, included the distribution of 9,000 tablets since registration ended on August 31.
According to CNN/Money, Apple started the program when the iPad 2 arrived last April. At the time, the Cupertino, California-based company invited owners of the original iPad who had no use for them to donate the iDevices to teachers in distressed areas.
Katie Remington (Middlebury '10) picked up hers -- a refurbished model that looked like new -- on Sunday and brought it to the inner-city high school in St. Louis where she runs the science department. "So far," she wrote after the first day, "I've figured out it can make them finish their work fast for 'iPad time.'"Since 1990, nearly 33,000 leaders have joined Teach For America, whose mission is to offer everyone a great education to kids, regardless of income or race. Laurene Powell, Steve Jobs’ wife sits on the organization’s board of directors.
