Dodge That Takes Gaming Into The Physical Realm
Dodge That (Free) by Fighissimo is a 3D video game for the iPad 2 that uses image recognition integrated into the program to allow you to dodge obstacles just by tilting your head. This innovative new game is on sale for free for a limited time.
Using the front-facing camera of the second generation iPad, your goal is to dodge the oncoming cubes as they fly past. The longer you play, the more cubes will appear, and at a faster rate. As they barrel toward you, you must tilt your head left, right, up or down to avoid a head-on crash. As the cubes pass you, they seem to stretch and move, giving the game a three-dimensional quality.
As games go, this one is not spectacular. It starts off a bit slow, and you start to wonder if it is even working. But after a few minutes, when the cubes really start to fly, it becomes more challenging and you find yourself bobbing and ducking to avoid a collision. You score points as time goes by and are ranked with others through the app’s internal ranking system.
As innovative technology goes, this app makes good use of image recognition. I’ve seen other apps that utilize this technology, but none that incorporate it into a game setting. This type of creative development could someday give competition to the Wii and Xbox’s Kinect.
Overall, this iPad 2-only game is interesting and innovative, but nothing to go crazy over. It will challenge you for sure, but may start to seem repetitive after a while. The use of the front-facing camera and image recognition is where this app really shines. Download it from the App Store while it is free.
