Learn All About Winter And Her Miraculous Recovery In Wild Dolphins For iPad

September 26, 2011
If you took your family out to see Dolphin Tale in theaters this weekend, or if you are simply interested in the wonderful world of marine mammals, you have to check out Wild Dolphins for iPad. It's a new educational app by Polymash, our latest AppAdvice Daily podcast sponsor, that tells the story behind Winter, a dolphin who gets caught in a crab trap near Florida, and her miraculous recovery. Before jumping into Winter's story, Wild Dolphins provides you with a little primer on dolphins detailing their anatomy, their 10 biggest threats, and what to do if you see a dolphin in distress. After that, you get to learn everything there is to know about Winter. The app covers Winter's heroic rescue from the crab trap through interviews and original footage by Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute's Brian Cousin. It also details Winter's life after the recovery but before she received her prosthetic fluke and tail. And, of course, you get to learn all about her state of the art prosthetic fluke and tail through interviews, interactive diagrams, and photos, and how it helped her lead a normal life. But Wild Dolphins isn't just about Winter. The app also features stories about how the team at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute saved the lives of other dolphins like Rio, Mono, and Hiho. You're able to navigate your way through all of this content using the same swipe gestures found in many of today's iPad magazine apps. Swiping from side to side will bring up new articles, while swiping up and down will allow you to view content for each article. Arrows in the bottom right corner of the screen allow you to see which direction you need to swipe to progress through the app. If you want to skip through articles, just tap once on the screen to bring up the menu system which allows you to view all of the articles in list form, or just drag your finger across the bottom to scroll through everything in a snap. Wild Dolphins is actually available in the App Store for free even though it is loaded with interactive content, over 20 videos, interviews, dolphin sounds, and advice on how to help dolphins, but you can show your appreciation by donating to protect wild dolphins from within the app. If you're a Florida resident, you can also check out the different specialty license plates that help contribute to the protection of the ocean and its wildlife.
