Rock Music, Crisp Graphics And Space Invaders Make Up The Arcade Game, Devourer

September 24, 2011

Devourer ($0.99) by Li Min has a retro arcade feel, but adds a bit more flair and creative gameplay with special items.

The rock music soundtrack changes things up and definitely adds a little something special to this space invasion game. It's easy to pick up and play, but has enough oomph to keep you coming back for more.

The controls are simple. Touch and drag your devourer — the black hole that is actually whiteish — around the screen, running it into the attacking alien lifeforms to destroy them and collect points.

There are two modes: Classic and Survival. Classic mode is a timed mode where you play for two minutes, trying to get the best score. But be careful of the red enemies as they will inhibit your score.

In Survival mode, you, well, just need to survive. As soon as you hit a red alien, the game is over. The yellow ones, however, will destroy all the aliens within the screen radius. All of the others will just give you points and not necessarily do something special.

The difference between this and other arcade destroyers, is that you can collect coins while playing. These coins can be used to purchase items or power ups — which are essentially usable spells — in the shop. This ranges from shields to numerous special attacks. Drag them into your three slots, purchase them, and you're all set to wreak even more havoc upon the invaders.

To use these purchased items, just tap them in game. They last for different amounts of time and will show on the top of your screen.

Devourer is only $0.99 in the App Store and comes equipped with both Game Center and OpenFeint support.

Great music, arcade gameplay, and graphics pull this one together and make it more than worth the small price tag.
