Don't Drop Money On DropTunes

DropTunes ($5.99) by John Mills plays music files stored in your Dropbox account.

Load the app and browse to your music files. Select the song you’d like and it will play after a lengthy “initializing” session. The app works with iTunes songs, as well as .mp3 and .wav files. You can even listen to the music in the background after leaving the app.

There’s just one problem; you can perform the same function by visiting the Dropbox site.

Using my iPad, I played a song with DropTunes and then logged in to Dropbox through Safari. Both took nine seconds to load the same song. You would think paying for an app would mean better performance. I can only guess that the app uses the same functionality as the Dropbox site, but packaged in a $5.99 suit.

The settings menu only offers the one option of logging out. There are no playback options, interface customization, or anything else to differentiate this app from the Dropbox site. Options are also lacking under the iDevice Settings. This app’s features are as minimal as the Dropbox app.

A badge shows above the player icon with the number of songs added, though the number doesn’t decrease after playing a song. Those who may be obsessive about getting rid of badges may not like that (among other reasons). I can’t even tell if the number is supposed to decrease or not.

For the hefty price tag of $5.99, this app reinforces the maxim that a fool and his money are soon parted.
