Hipsta Chez - Addictive and Smart Time Killer ($0.99) by Silent Media turns the game of chess on its head and then has it breakdance.
This game is like chess only in that it has all of the pieces, which move as they normally would, and it takes place on a checkered board. The main goal is not to put your opponent in a checkmate because there is no opponent and sometimes the king might not even be on the board.
Essentially, this game is Bejeweled meets chess. The board looks like a denim pocket, complete with rivets and stitching, and the squares are alternating colors of dark and light blue.
Random red and blue pieces will be placed on the board, and it’s your job to get four of one color in a row (either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). Move the pieces into position and they clear out. Watch out though, because moving a piece without completing a line populates the board with more pieces.
Gameplay options include Normal, Blitz, and Superblitz, with each mode limiting the time you have until more pieces populate the board.
A tutorial walks you through how to play, though in-game pointers also lend a hand. While handy at first, it would be nice if you could disable the in-game hints. The hints feel too much like hand holding once you become familiar with the game.
A snare drum and heavy kick drum provide the bulk of the music. While fun to listen to for a while, it ultimately becomes distracting while trying to focus on the game and what pieces to move. It's a good thing that there is at least an option to turn off the music.
This game is quite unique, though it tries too hard by adding the hip hop element. The gameplay alone is enough to set it apart from other games. Part Bejeweled, part chess, Hipsta Chez is all fun.
