Just the Tip - The Globetrotting Tip Calculator ($1.99) by Abstract Factory is a beautiful tip calculator for your iPhone.
We all go out to eat at restaurants every now and then, and the most annoying part is figuring out how much you should be tipping your waiter. Not to mention the fact that this is also different in every country (for the most part). Just the Tip aims to make calculating the tip for a meal easy, no matter where in the world you are.
Once you stop giggling at the name (yes, we’re aware of the innuendo there), you’ll come to appreciate the beautiful design of Just the Tip.
The app launches into a clean and minimalistic interface. Tap on the middle of the screen, and you get a “ribbon” of various continents to choose from. Select a continent and you’ll then be taken to the calculator screen, where you are able to select the country you want to view tip percentages for.
Alternatively, you can just have the app find your location automatically by tapping on the “Find Me” button.
Once you’re on the calculator screen, just select the country to view tip percentages. Just the Tip allows you to enter in your own rates if you believe it’s different from the standard (for example, you can enter in 10 percent and use that rather than 15 percent). Then simply punch in the bill amount in the keypad and watch the app magically calculate the tip and give you a total.
There’s an “i” in the middle of the screen that will give you information on the tipping in the selected country. For example, North America countries will say that tipping is expected for restaurants, bars, food delivery, and taxis. On the other hand, countries like China (which have a zero percent tipping rate) will inform you that foreigners get charged more for services they receive, as mandated by Chinese government.
Another feature of Just the Tip is the ability to split the cost equally among others. To access this, just swipe right-to-left on the keypad. The app is able to split the cost of the total bill (including tips) between one to 20 people.
I found Just the Tip to be a very useful tipping calculator. It has a beautiful interface, and can easily get the tipping rate for different countries in a snap. If you’re a frequent traveler, then this app may prove invaluable to you when it comes time to eat out at a restaurant with friends or family.
However, the only problem with the app is that it does not represent a complete database of every country in the world. It currently only includes a handful of countries, but I hope that the developers can include more in future updates.
If you are a globetrotter, then it’s definitely worth it to check out Just the Tip, and hope that more countries get included. It also makes for a great tip calculator even if you aren’t always traveling. And for the record, the name is just great (you may commence giggling now).
