Silly Owls ($0.99) by Pinch Games may be yet another physics based puzzle game featuring birds, but this fun app has some unique gameplay elements along with bright, colorful graphics and silly characters that are sure to keep you entertained.

The goal of the game is to help the wayward owls Doory, Hooty, and Woody reach their birdhouses using a combination of jumping, sliding, rolling, and slingshotting. There are three sets of levels, each one dedicated to a different owl. The owls have different abilities, and each one uses separate game mechanics.

Hooty rolls along wooden planks, and by using apples, you must prevent her from falling off and guide her to her birdhouse. Doory’s levels are a lot like slingshot games such as Angry Birds, and you must use a rubberband to shoot him home. Woody skates along on a banana skateboard, and unlike the other two, his level is endless.

Essentially, it’s like three different games in one. It’s fun to have some variety, and you can skip from owl to owl as often as you like. In all of the levels, to get the maximum score, it’s important to collect the three available stars. Or, in the case of Woody, to get as far as possible to grab stars.

The first two sets of levels aren’t easy, even to the point of frustrating. The mechanics of the game don’t work well enough at times, making it difficult to achieve the goals the game wants you to reach. For example, avoiding cactuses while slingshotting Doory is a formidable task, as is dropping that apple on Hooty at the exact right time. I did enjoy Woody’s endless level, but again, the jump and slide mechanics need to be improved in regards to responsiveness and game difficulty.

Honestly, this game is nothing that you haven’t seen before, in many iterations in the App Store. The gameplay isn’t unique, and actually a bit harder. However, the three game types and the crisp graphics may make this a worthwhile purchase if you’re a serious physics game enthusiast.
