Storyboards Premium Is Your Preproduction Friend

September 2, 2011

Storyboards Premium ($14.99) by Tamajii Inc makes storyboarding your movie a breeze.

For me, when it comes to mapping out my shots, I always start with crudely drawn boxes and simple figures. By the time I reach the fourth frame, my shots are reduced to stick figures. Before finishing the fifth frame, I wonder how much I really need a storyboard and just ditch it. It’s not to say that I wouldn’t like to map out how my movie will look, it’s just a lengthy process.

This app is designed to simplify the process.

The app adds storyboards for every shot of your film that you’d like to conceptualize. You start with a blank canvas, and tap to add the elements of the shot, including humans and props. But the different drawings aren’t limited to what-you-see-is-what-you-get. Each one can be customized by changing its orientation and size.

For the human elements, you can swap out faces, change outfits, or select different poses. The developer also offers drawing tools to provide the object, face, or position you need if the app doesn’t offer something specific enough.

Moving the elements on the screen and manipulating them is a little slow at first. However, once you get the hang of it, you might find yourself going way past the fifth frame.

What I like about this app is that you don’t have to necessarily storyboard every single frame of the movie. Instead of adding another shot to Scene 1, you can easily rename the shot for any other scene.

Options for exporting your finished work include email, sending to iTunes, adding to Photos, or printing.

If you’re in need of a storyboarding solution, this app just works.
