Quirky App Of The Day: Zombie Fishies

September 6, 2011
I had goldfish as a kid, and all my fish ever did was poop in their natural habitat. We did have that one unfortunate time when my uncle accidentally caught a baby muskellunge, or "muskie" from the local river. For those who don't know what those are, they are wicked mean fish that will bite your hand if you stick it anywhere near it. Once they get a hold, they won't let go. It ate all the fish in the tank and outgrew the tank in only a week or so. After consulting with a vet about what possessed, demon-spawned fish we had brought in our home, we released it back into the river. After playing Zombie Fishies today, all I could think about was that I had perhaps come in contact with a zombie fish once before, and I had carelessly allowed it to be released into the wild. My conscience is heavy with this revelation. Like the muskie that gobbled our guppies and goldfish (may they ever rest in pieces), your fish fight viciously in Zombie Fishies. Provided with an arena, your fish grapple in blood clouds until there is only one victor. Also like the muskie, your fish eat brains to stay alive. True, the muskie eats the other parts of fish as well, but I couldn't help myself in drawing the extra parallel to the zombie fish. Your fish swim around in a tank that is about as disgusting as if you let a real fish tank go for a few months. You can buy different backgrounds or gravel for your darling little monster fighters should the mood strike you, or you can upgrade your fish tank to accomodate more friends for your fishies. Basically, you have the relaxed (if there's anything relaxing about zombies) ambience of a fish tank to care for with the gruesome appeal of fish fights and brain fish food. After tending to your fish for some time, they will grow into adulthood. They don't become more mature, just more vicious. It's more like a child turning into a teenager than a teenager turning into an adult. It's only able to fight when it's an adult. You can advance their growth by using pearls, and you can earn pearls by completing quests. I think that the quests give the game further dimension. You know, besides the whole premise of breeding and fighting zombie fish. Or muskies. Whichever. Zombie Fishies, a universal app, is available on the App Store for the awesome price of FREE!
