GroupMe™ (Free) by Mindless Dribble Inc. is a group text organizer that lets you keep track of conversations and easily chat with groups in a text format. It is like Google Groups for your iPhone and it has recently been acquired by Skype.

The app lets you create groups and start conversations with multiple people. Access your friends, family and coworkers’ contact information easily just by typing their name. Once you have added the people you want to create a conversation with, just start typing. If you want to ask your band mates what time they want to meet for practice, create a “band practice” group and everyone can respond with a text that will look like a chat window. Each group receives its own phone number that everyone in the group is assigned to. A text is sent to those people and the conversation begins. Group members can also initiate a conference call using the same number. It is also possible to send direct messages to someone in a group if you don’t want the rest to hear the conversation. For example, you may be discussing practice times for your band, but need your drummer to give you a ride. Just start a one-on-one conversation to discuss transportation.

The app has recently been updated to offer the option to “ask a question.” This beta feature allows you to send a quick question to one or all of your contacts, as well as sending the same question to Facebook and Twitter. If you are looking for something to do on Friday night, it is easy to ask your entire social network what is going on.

GroupMe has existed for nearly a year now and has become such a popular group text app that it caught the eye of Skype, who recently acquired it. It is unknown what the future holds for either company, but it stands to reason that Skype will soon offer group texting and GroupMe will soon offer access to the former’s vast contact list.

You don’t have to max out your texting limits with this app either. Messages can be pushed to you through your iPhone’s notification feature instead of setting up the SMS option and you will not be dinged every time you send or receive a message.

Overall, this free app is a must have for those who communicate by text message on a regular basis. It is easy to use, and offers a wide variety of conversation features. It offers the ability to include pictures in messages, make conference calls and send questions to Facebook and Twitter. Now that Skype has acquired the app, it is sure to get even better. Download it from the App Store now.
