AirPlay Mirroring Works (Almost) As Advertised

October 13, 2011
For those of you hoping iOS 5's "AirPlay Mirroring" feature would prove an effective workaround for the App Store's various AirPlay opt-outs, early indications are you'll probably be a bit disappointed. Our friends at TiPB have already made some preliminary tests, and they're reporting decidedly mixed results:
CityTV wouldn’t work — it cited contractual obligations. CTV did work and so did Global. Crackle was buggy.
While the jury's still well out on this one, it's important to note that, for mirroring to work at maximum efficiency, you'll need to be in close proximity to a fast, reliable router. And, though movie and TV apps should be clearly hit-or-miss, games are a different beast altogether. Case in point: When I tried to mirror Forever Drive to the big screen, I got a static splash icon but actual, live audio.  So, in short, just be patient. Since the service only launched today, each app you try is likely to behave differently. Let us know what's what in the comments, and, as we get a clearer picture of the state of AirPlay Mirroring over the next several weeks, we'll be sure to let you know about any significant anomalies and exceptions.
